AB & David Africa hosted the Crystal Ball Africa 2024 on January 18, 2024 at the Labadi Beach Hotel. Crystal Ball Africa is a Pan- Africa business forum that provides a platform for businesses and policy makers across the continent to discuss and proffer solutions to the key issues that may impact business in the new year. In its tenth year, the conference was themed: “One Continent, One Market – Growing Businesses Beyond Borders”.

The CEO of the Ghana Commodity Exchange, Mrs. Tucci Goka Ivowi spoke on a panel moderated by Hannah Acquaye (CEO, Ghana Venture Capital and Private Equity Association) which deliberated on the topic of "Raising Capital from Alternate Sources”. Ms. Abena Amoah (CEO, Ghana Stock Exchange) and Dr. Tedd Moya Mose (an academic, international consultant, and entrepreneur) shared on the growing opportunities on the stock market and the carbon market, respectively. Ms. Amoah divulged that education on capital markets is vital for increased trade volumes on the exchange. She shared an instance where an SME owner was able to raise a significant amount of capital, trading on the alternative market on the Ghana Stock Exchange. The Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) is the market segment of the GSE dedicated to SMEs. Dr. Mose shared that African businesses and governments must work together to create enabling environments to develop the carbon market for an effective financing system.

Mrs. Ivowi shared a success story of the first trade on the Commodity Exchange, where the farmer was exhilarated to receive payment for his commodity within twenty-four hours.  She highlighted the transformative impact of commodities exchanges on business viability, as they provide storage infrastructure, transparent information and market access. She added that innovative financial products like warehouse receipt financing and derivatives contracts contribute to making businesses more bankable, since the financial institutions can confirm their trading history. She stressed that the structured platform offered by commodity exchanges mitigates price risks and significantly boosts investor confidence.

The conference provided businesses and professionals the opportunity to understand current trends impacting diverse industries, growing sectors to invest in, how to navigate 2024, how to enhance trade using technology and fintech, as well as lessons from intra-Africa Trade. The Exchange is poised to harness these insights to further promote food security and economic transformation in Ghana.
