GCX SUCCESSFULLY TRADES 1000MT OF RAW CASHEW NUTS WORTH GHC 6MILLION AT THE SECOND RESERVE AUCTION TRADING

On 28th July, 2021, the Ghana Commodity Exchange undertook its second reserve trading auction of raw cashew nuts which saw to the trade of 1000MT of raw cashew nuts.

As GCX operates to develop various agricultural value chains and provide export opportunities for Ghanaian commodities, the Exchange organized a reserve trading auction to engage market actors in the Cashew Value Chain. The maiden edition was held earlier in April this year which resulted in the trade of 50MT and the second held in July this year saw to the trade of 1000MT of raw cashew nuts.

The reserve cashew auction will be undertaken periodically to demonstrate to the actors in the cashew value chain how the GCX structured trading concept which includes; commodity quality testing, grading, weighing, packaging and standardization works and to prepare cashew value chain market actors on how to trade on the Exchange as an alternative and a more structured market for trade.

The 1000MT raw cashew nut, valued at GHC 6million was sold by KAKSFOUR COMMODITIES LTD, a wholly Ghanaian private owned and licensed to undertake business in Cashew nuts trading and general Agri-business both in Ghana and internationally. The company is a registered Broker member of the Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) and the African Cashew Alliance (ACA) since 2019.

The newest and very exciting development with the second auction is that, through the risk mitigation measures put in place by the Ghana Commodity Exchange, the seller was able to access financing from

The Head of Commercial, FBNBank Mr. Neequaye expressed excitement at the measures put in place by GCX to allow banks to come on board to offer more credit facilities to actors in the agricultural value chain. “We are going to sit with GCX to look at how we can develop more products to ensure that not only cashew but all products that come through GCX, FBNBank will be in a position to fund their aggregation,” he said.

Mr. Francis Peprah the seller and the representative of KAKSFOUR mentioned GCX as the game changer and used the opportunity to solicit more support from financial institutions so KAKSFOUR can sell 20,000MT in the next reserve auction.

A person in a mask using a computerDescxxxription automatically generated with low confidenceAggregation financing is a critical support to Exchange members (mostly aggregators) as the financing arrangement by collaborating banks enables them to secure funds so that they can aggregate their commodities to the GCX warehouses. This is a financing product being offered by the Exchange currently through its risk management framework to improve access to financing from the banks to aggregators.

The Ghana Commodity Exchange also has the warehouse receipt financing product which is aimed at providing access to credit to smallholder farmers primarily. With this financing product, smallholder farmers upon storing their commodities in a GCX certified warehouse and receiving the GCX warehouse receipt can take the receipt to collaborating banks in exchange for a loan. Therefore, collateral in the form of houses and cars is no longer needed by a farmer to access credit.

About Reserve Auctions

With the Reserve trading auction, interested buyers and sellers were brought together to discover prices fairly and transparently. A Reserve Auction is a payment against delivery system whereby the farmers ( sellers ) announce a minimum price for their product incorporating their production cost in the sale price. The buyers then put in a bid, hopefully to match the farmers’ asking price, factoring in transportation and other costs. By so doing, both the buyers and sellers hedge against their cost in a win-win situation for all.
