GHANA COMMODITY EXCHANGE SUPPORTED BY USAID/GHANA TRADE AND INVESTMENT PROJECT (GTI) HOSTS STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION ON COWPEA AND SHEA NUT image

The Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX), in collaboration with the USAID/Ghana Trade and Investment (GTI) project, recently hosted separate consultation meetings with stakeholders in the shea nut and cowpea industries on January 31st and February 1st, 2024, respectively. Both meetings, held in Tamale, looked to seek the insights and expertise of stakeholders which is part of a crucial step in the process of listing commodities and products on the Ghana Commodity Exchange after a comprehensive value chain analysis is conducted.

Participating in these consultative meetings were representatives from the public, and private sectors, development partners, and farmer groups. Discussions focused on crucial aspects such as production, storage, marketing dynamics, pricing volatility, and quality parameters within the cowpea and shea nut industries.

GTI/Feed the Future, an initiative funded by USAID, was present to reaffirm its commitment to fostering economic growth and prosperity in Ghana through targeted agricultural interventions. The collaboration with GCX on this initiative was highlighted as significant towards achieving shared objectives.

As part of the discussions, the role of the Ghana Commodity Exchange and its role in the shea and cowpea value chain were talked about, findings of the value chain analysis on both commodities were delved into and the quality standards for trade were further discussed. This is to ensure that the final contracts established for these commodities align with the needs and dynamics of the shea nut and cowpea industries.

The interactive and educative nature of these consultative meetings showed the commitment of stakeholders in improving trade in these industries not only for the benefit of Ghana but for global trade. This collaborative effort is to foster growth and competitiveness in Ghana's agricultural commodities market, ultimately contributing to increased investment, economic growth, and improved livelihoods for value chain actors.
